Barry Snyder is a shaper out of Oceanside, California. He has been shaping for over twenty years and is the master mind/head shaper at Windigo Surfboards who recently opened a factory in 2010 in Oceanside. He worked under Dick Brewer and Gary Linden for years before shaping under his own name. He has recently been making some really awesome agave boards. We were lucky enough to get Barry to share his story with us and also share some of his designs.
How did you get your start shaping and what kind of boards do you like to build?
I’ve been designing surfboards since I first fixed an old 7’2″ Russell single fin. Filled all the dings with bondo and painted it blue and white with a Lightning bolt on the deck. Five years later, I got a job sweeping the floors at Dick Brewer Surfboards in Oceanside. At this stage in my life, all I know is building surfboards. I was fortunate to learn from many true craftsmen including Gary Linden, Dick Brewer, Hank Byzak, Rod Sorenson and too many others to list. I have to thank Gary Linden who employed me for 16 Years. He taught me all aspects of board building. From shaping to making my own blanks with custom glued stringers, to making my own fins, and working at every stage of board building on a professional level. Which I still do to this day. Since my days at Gary’s factory, I have honed my skills making standard Poly boards, Epoxy boards, Exotic wood boards, minis, Performance Shortboards, Hy-Breds, Guns, Longboards, & more. Dimensions: 9′ 2″ x 21″ x2 3/4″
Model: GreenGoblin/Disect
Board Description: This is one of my “Disect” Models. This board is one of many I’m doing this year.I have a whole series from Aysometrical Shortboards to Longboards to Guns. Board started as a Bennett longboard blank. I cut and glued black gluelines, then I glued 1/4″ Parabolic Stringers along the rail. Then I glued solid foam rails. I then did a bright green paint job. I wanted to make a Bonzer so I made the fins and glassed them on. Then I painted the lace on the rails. This board was for the Windigo Booth at the Sacred Craft Show in San Diego this last August. I have made a few of these and always get a good reaction to them.
